: Microsoft is cutting more jobs, after laying off 10,000 earlier this year

Microsoft Corp. will cut more jobs, in addition to the 10,000 layoffs announced earlier this year.

GeekWire first reported that a new round of cuts was announced Monday, targeting employees in customer service, support and sales. The number of layoffs was not revealed, but a filing with Washington state’s Employment Security Department said 276 workers in the Seattle area will lose their jobs.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In January, Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said about 10,000 jobs would be eliminated, less than 5% of its global workforce, as the tech giant looked to cut costs.

Microsoft MSFT, -1.60% started its new fiscal year on July 1.

More than 216,000 tech workers around the world have been laid off already this year, easily topping tech-industry layoffs for all of 2022.

Microsoft shares have surged 38% year to date, compared to a 2.4% gain by the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.62%, which counts Microsoft as a component, and the S&P 500’s SPX, +0.24% 15% gain.
