New COVID-19 infections continued to rise for the thirdday in a row in Tamil Nadu with 1,986 people testing positive, pushing the overall tallyto 25,59,597, while 26 deaths took the toll to 34,076.
Recoveries outnumbered new infections with 2,178 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 25,04,805, leaving 20,716active infections, a health department bulletin said.

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 225 fresh COVID-19 fatalities and 6,959 cases while 7,467 patients recovered, a health official said. With the new additions, the tally of infections in Maharashtra reached 63,03,715 and the death toll to 1,32,791. The count of recoveries now stands at 60,90,786, leaving the state with 76,755 active cases, he said. On Saturday, Maharashtra witnessed a marginal rise in fresh coronavirus positive cases compared to Thursday when the state added 6,600 new cases to its tally and 231 fatalities.

Newly reported COVID-19 cases in Olympic host city Tokyo surged to a record high of 4,058 today, the metropolitan government said, exceeding 4,000 for the first time and overshadowing the Games. The new record comes a day after Japan decided to extend states of emergency to three prefectures near Olympic host Tokyo and the western prefecture of Osaka its state of emergency for Tokyo to the end of August and expand it to three prefectures near Tokyo and the western prefecture of Osaka in light of the recent spike in infections.
Amid intensifying concerns, Tokyo Olympics organisers said today that they had revoked accreditation of a Games-related person or people for leaving the athletes’ village for sightseeing, a violation of measures imposed to hold the Olympics safely amid the pandemic. The organisers did not disclose how many people had their accreditation revoked, if the person or people involved were athletes, or when the violation took place. The active COVID-19 cases in Ladakh dropped to 50 after 14 more patients recovered from the disease, while four new infections pushed the overall tally in the union territory to 20,328, officials said today. Ladakh has registered 207 COVID-related deaths — 149 in Leh and 58 in Kargil — since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, while 20,071 patients have recovered till date. The number of active cases in Ladakh has dropped to 50 with 44 in Leh and six in Kargil, the officials said. (PTI)
