: Trump says he expects to be indicted ‘any day now’ in Jan. 6 probe

United States

Former President Donald Trump has offered renewed criticism of special counsel Jack Smith and suggested that an indictment could be imminent in Smith’s probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, including the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“I assume that an Indictment from Deranged Jack Smith and his highly partisan gang of Thugs, pertaining to my ‘PEACEFULLY & PATRIOTICALLY Speech, will be coming out any day now, as yet another attempt to cover up all of the bad news about bribes, payoffs, and extortion, coming from the Biden ‘camp,’” said Trump, the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, in a post Monday on his Truth Social platform.

On July 18, Trump said he had received a letter telling him that he is a target of Smith’s probe, and he said at that time that he anticipated he would be indicted.

A federal grand jury considering charges against Trump related to Jan. 6 reconvened on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., according to multiple published reports.

Separately, a prosecutor in Georgia’s Fulton County reaffirmed in an interview with a CNN affiliate in Atlanta over the weekend that she will announce charging decisions by Sept. 1 in her investigation into efforts to overturn that state’s results in the 2020 presidential election.

“The work is accomplished,” Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis told WXIA, also known as 11 Alive. “We’ve been working for two and a half years. We’re ready to go.”

Last week, orange barricades were set up outside the county courthouse in a sign of increased security before the expected indictment.

Trump was already indicted in March in a Manhattan case focused on hush-money payments, and he was indicted in June in a Miami case focused on classified documents.
