Walmart Inc. announced on Wednesday a partnership with campsite company Getaway to build small retail stores that will offer supplies to visitors spending some time in nature.
The General Store by Walmart will sell hiking gear, cast iron skillets, campfire gear and more. The first will open in August at the Getaway Hill Country in Wimberly, Tex.
Getaway builds collections of tiny cabins, called Outposts, in locations about two hours away from major cities. More “glamping” than camping, Getaway cabins have kitchens, toilets, and queen-size beds.
Founded in 2015, Getaway will have 28 locations by the end of 2022. Locations also include Moodus, Conn., Running Springs, Calif., Roscoe, N.Y. and Osceola, Mo., which will all be opening a General Store by Walmart location through the end of the year.
Customers will also be able to sign up for a complimentary trial membership to Walmart+.
Walmart WMT, -7.60% stock has declined 15.7% for the year to date, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.71% has lost 12.6%.
