The White House will be hoppin’ on Monday, when President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden host for the first Easter Egg Roll in two years.
It’s been a longstanding Easter tradition since 1878 for the White House to open the South Lawn to the public so that children can roll eggs, go on Easter egg hunts and enjoy other traditional Easter activities. But the COVID-19 pandemic put the fun on hiatus for the past couple of years. (Previously, the Easter Egg Roll has been canceled for inclement weather, or for security reasons during WWII in 1942.)
Come Monday, however, the Bidens are expected to host 30,000 kids (accompanied by their grown-up chaperones) for an education-themed day created by the first lady, who is a community college professor and has been teaching for more than three decades.
“As a teacher, my heart is always in the classroom,” the FLOTUS tweeted. “Joe and I look forward to welcoming thousands of families to join us for this year’s White House Easter ‘EGGucation’ Roll!”
The “EGGucation” Roll will include a school house activity area, a reading nook, and a school picture day. Also planned: What the White House is calling a field trip to the farm, a talent show, a physical “EGGucation” zone with an obstacle course, as well as the requisite Easter egg hunt and the egg roll. The roll itself involves kids using wooden spoons to push their eggs in a race across the South Lawn.
And the White House is billing special guests and performers for this year’s event, including: Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth; singer Ciara; singer/actress Sofia Carson; Sesame Street Live; “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon; sports teams including the Washington Commanders, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens; and costumed characters like Snoopy, Cookie Monster, the Minions, and Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat.
Thousands of military families, as well as the crew members and families from the submarine, the USS DELAWARE, have been invited to this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. And tickets were available to members of the general public from across the country via an online public lottery.
