Zomato shares shed 9 percent in the early trade on February 11 even after the company minimised its losses for the quarter ended December 2021.

Zomato on February 10 posted a consolidated loss of Rs 63.2 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3FY22). It had reported a loss of Rs 352.6 crore in the year-ago period.

Revenue from the operations came in at Rs 1,112 crore, up 82.7 percent against Rs 609.4 crore logged in a year back.

The restaurant aggregator and food delivery company said that its Gross Order Value (GOV) grew by 84.5 percent on-year and 1.7 percent on-quarter to Rs 55 billion or 5,500 crore ($ 733 million) in the third quarter of fiscal 2021-22.

The online food delivery firm has set aside $ 400 million to invest in quick commerce stating that this category offers a “huge addressable market” and is synergistic with its food delivery business.

“We are very bullish on the product-market fit, unit economics, as well as the growth trajectory of the quick commerce category. It reminds us of the food delivery category a few years ago when many platforms competed over a large and growing market but ultimately only the few who delivered exceptional experience to their customers survived,” Deepinder Goyal, founder and chief executive of Zomato said in a statement.

“We are becoming increasingly confident in our decision to invest behind market leadership here with healthy unit economics. As a result, we are updating the upper bound of our potential investments in this category to $ 400┬ámillion cash over the next two years,” he said.

The company made an investment of $ 225 million last year across Blinkit (erstwhile Grofers), Shiprocket and Magicpin.

Here is what brokerages have to say about the stock and the company post December quarter earnings:

Morgan Stanley

The broking house has kept the ‘overweight’ rating on the stock with a target price at Rs 150. The lack of growth in MTU and slowdown in GOV offset positive from lower burn rates.

The stock may remain rangebound in the near term.

Credit Suisse

The research firm has maintained the ‘outperform’ rating and cut the target price to Rs 120 from Rs 185.

It was a weak quarter as GOV growth slows down.

BofAML

The brokerage house has kept the ‘buy’ call on benign regulation and strong revenue growth rate, but cut the target to Rs 115.

It was a disappointing quarter with miss on revenue. The costs continue to remain elevated.

At 9:18am, Zomato was quoting at Rs 89, down Rs 5.50, or 5.82 percent, on the BSE.
