In 2018, when the Narendra Modi-led BJP government decided that sale was the only way forward to resolve the mess that was Air India, it was at best a half-hearted effort. At the time the government was seeking to retain part control of the airline, offering only 76 percent and not a 100 percent stake, something no private player was comfortable with. Further, too little of the total debt of around Rs 60,000-odd crore was being borne by the government….
