The Margin: This Airheads candy chicken sandwich might ruffle some feathers on #NationalFriedChickenDay

United States

Chicken sandwiches are getting out of control.

In honor of National Fried Chicken Day on Tuesday, iconic Chicago restaurant Frances’ Deli & Brunchery has teamed up with candy maker Perfetti Van Melle to serve a chicken sandwich on a bun made with Airheads Xtremes candy.

“The world will finally see what’s been missing in chicken,” crowed Craig Cuchra, the vice president of marketing for Perfetti Van Melle North America, in a plucky press release promoting the Airheads “Candy Chicken Sandy.”

The confectionery company also sent out a flurry of tweets announcing its entry into the chicken sandwich wars that have raged between fast food chains like Wendy’s WEN, -1.45% and Chick-fil-A since Popeyes’ New Orleans-style sammie created a total clustercluck in summer 2019.

McDonald’s MCD, -0.79% and Restaurant Brands International’s QSR, -1.68% Burger King have since entered the fried-chicken fray.

A rep from Airheads confirmed that this sandwich is 100% real, and not a hoax. A limited quantity of sample sizes for people to try will be handed out at Frances’ restaurant in Chicago on Tuesday. And the ingredients include fried chicken, coleslaw, spicy mayo, pickles — and, of course, the rainbow-striped bun made up of “delicious sweet and sour Airheads Xtremes.”

But if the idea of nesting savory fried chicken in a sweet taffy bun isn’t to your taste, there are plenty of more traditional poultry dishes available at a discount in honor of #NationalFriedChickenDay on Tuesday. Many of them will push you to place your order online or by using each restaurant chain’s app, however.

Yum! Brands’ YUM, -0.75% KFC is offering $ 3 off a minimum $ 15 purchase for orders placed through DoorDash DASH, -0.54% — when they include a Pepsi PEP, -0.39% or Diet Pepsi, in a little case of cross-promotion.

Taco Bell is taking $ 1 off a Naked Chicken Chalupa Meal through the chain’s app.

Customers using the Popeyes’ app for the first time can get a free chicken sandwich when spending at least $ 10 on an online order.

Burger King’s new Ch’King chicken sandwich is $ 2.99 on Tuesday (normally $ 3.99 to $ 4.99) via an offer on its app and website.

Jollibee JFC, -1.29% is serving a $ 20 fried chicken sampler that includes bone-in chicken, three chicken tender pieces, a six-piece Chickenjoy bucket and two chicken sandwiches through July 11.

And a coupon on White Castle’s website entitles customers who buy one Crispy Chicken Slider, Chicken Ring Slider or Chicken & Waffles Slider on Tuesday to a second one for free, which is available for carryout or dine-in.
