Kelley Blue Book: Take a look at the new electric Hummer

The all-electric 2024 GMC Hummer SUV made its debut during the NCAA Final Four. It offers up to 300 miles of driving range, with proportions that could make it one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the market. We’ll let you know for certain once we’ve had the chance to test it.

General Motors GM, +0.12% has brought the Hummer name back after 10 years off the market. Over the next two years, the company will first introduce, a truck, and later, this SUV, under the Hummer moniker. But these are not the giant, gasoline-powered Hummers that Americans could buy from 1996 until 2010.

The new Hummers are smaller than the old models.


For one thing, they’re not sold in separate Hummer dealerships. These will be offered as a subbrand of GMC. The Hummer SUV will appear in 2023 as a 2024 model, with prices ranging from $ 79,995 to north of $ 110,000, depending on options.

The SUV will have four-wheel steering.


Up to 830 horsepower and 300-mile range

For another, they’re electric vehicles. Using GM’s new Ultium electric vehicle architecture — a modular system allows buyers to select several battery and motor configurations. Depending on which boxes you tick, you can buy a Hummer SUV with two or three motors, good for 625 or 830 horsepower. Battery options give a minimum of 250 and a maximum of 300 miles of driving range.

The fastest configuration can get from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. GM didn’t give stats for any other setup.

Four-wheel steering is a particularly cool feature. A “crab walk” mode sets the rear wheels to turn with the front wheels — likely useful for parking and for getting out of tough situations on the trail. Outside of crab walk mode, the rear wheels turn opposite the front wheels, giving it a much tighter turning radius than you might expect. At 35.4 feet, it’s tighter than that of a Toyota TM, +0.59% Corolla.

The interior repeats the blocky theme of the exterior.


And while the new Hummers share a familial resemblance with the old models, they are distinctly smaller. The SUV is even smaller than the pickup model – the wheelbase is 9 inches shorter, and the overall length is likely even shorter than that (Actual dimensions haven’t been released).

Wider, not longer

The exterior of the Hummer SUV is distinctly blocky and wide. The wheels are pushed far to the corners, which should give it excellent approach and departure angles for rock crawling.

The interior follows a similar blocky theme. Interestingly, it mimics the Hummers of the early 2000s with a much wider transmission tunnel than in most cars — but it’s purely cosmetic. As an EV, the Hummer SUV has no transmission. So, there is open space beneath it here, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see an option added later that lets drivers delete it entirely for a more spacious feel.

The Hummer SUV has a removable roof.


A spacious feel is easy to achieve, though, with the standard Infinity Roof and removable Sky Panels. The roof is almost entirely glass, and the panels can be removed for an open-top driving experience. They fit in the front trunk, should you wish to make the change on the go.


It will be one of the more expensive SUVs on the market. GMC will offer four trim levels at launch. We’ll bring more details on those once we know them.
