Sensex and the art of getting it wrong

Last Christmas, the Sensex was at 15,738. A few days before they left for their year-end break, analysts at CLSA had predicted the index would touch 17,000 by end of 2012, a measly gain of over 1,200 points or eight per cent over the year. Cut the transaction costs, brokerage and other costs, even savings bank interest rates appeared to be better. In January, Deutsche expected the Indian bellwether to be 18,000. At a Citi India investor conference in May, when the index was around 16,100-mark, the bank’s analysts expected the index to be around 18,200, a gain of 13 per cent by the year-end. All these targets were widely reported.

Sadly, closing on Christmas Eve suggests that these analysts have all got it hopelessly wrong. Worse, their targets have been misleading. Christmas to Christmas, the index has given a whopping 23.5 per cent, almost thrice as our first analyst had predicted. Now, this is not a case of a minor error in judgement. It was an absolutely wrong and misleading call. At 23.5 per cent, equities have beaten fixed deposits, money market schemes and every other paper investment available for the Indian investor, even before taxes. Who is answerable for these misleading calls? Aren’t these analysts taking millions of investors’ money home in fat packages and bonuses supposed to be apologising for the blunders they made?

Oh, we are sure that they had made themselves immune by putting out those disclaimers in those micro-fonts at unreadable corners in those research reports. So, what? Should we let them get away?

If this is the level of understanding of equities at the apex level of your research firm/brokerage, imagine what would be the understanding of the foot soldier who is coming to sell you the stock or making that call to you on phone? Chances are high that he knows less than you and is just bluffing his way into your wallet. Be scared. Be very scared.

Equity sellers often get away by not giving clear targets for the short term, calling the entire asset class long-term. This is a big bull. I would never buy it. Equity is one of the most dynamic asset classes and needs constant attention and frequent adjustments, more so in these days of hyper-information flow.

Investors who are getting into new advisory or brokerage relationships with brokers or advisories should demand clauses in the agreement that penalise brokers for such misleading calls. There should be provisions in the agreement, which provide for frequent rebalancing of the portfolio in tune with the changing market environment. Recently, a fund manager explained how advisors in Boston, US lost their licences for not rebalancing their clients’ portfolio in time to avert losses.

The Street, like many of our British legacy institutions such as bureaucracy, police and transport services, has been self-serving and has often looked down upon the consumer. Though a lot has changed in terms of clothes, systems and language, the lay investor often remains susceptible to abuse. Let us hope it changes before there is an India Gate on Dalal Street.

Sensex loses 75 points during the week

Posted on Saturday, December 22, 2012 - 17:11 pm

The BSE benchmark Sensex failed to hold on to mid-week gains and ended the week lower by 75 points at 19,242.00 due to tail-end selling from operators triggered by worries over the US budget issue.

With this the 30-share index extended its losses for the second straight week.

Investor sentiment took a further hit after CBI on Friday filed a chargesheet in connection with alleged irregularities in spectrum allocation during the BJP-led NDA Government. The Central agency named three telecom players, including Bharti Airtel, as accused in the chargesheet.

A steep fall in overseas stock markets on worries over US budget deficit issue pulled down domestic shares.

“Global cues were not supportive as US fiscal cliff issues continued to overshadow other economic news,” Amar Ambani, Head of Research at IIFL, said.

Trading sentiment was also dampened after Government lowered the growth projection for the current financial year to 5.7-5.9 per cent from 7.6 per cent estimated earlier.

The BSE benchmark resumed lower at 19,290.92, but recovered afterwards to hit a high of 19,520.51 on expectation of easing of monetary policy by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) next month. On its policy review on Tuesday, the Central bank kept key interest rates unchanged, but indicated that they may be cut in the next review.

However, the Sensex fell on fag-end selling due to weakness in global stocks on concerns over fiscal cliff in the world’s largest economy. It settled at 19,242.00, a loss of 75.25 points, or 0.39 per cent, over the last weekend close.

The NSE 50-share Nifty dropped 31.90 points, or 0.54 per cent, to end the week at 5,847.70.

Good buying in metal stocks following indication of economic recovery in China, the world’s largest consumer of copper and aluminium, boosted the market sentiment. Pharma, IT and auto shares also were in demand.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued their buying spree during week, investing a net Rs 4,590.94 crore, including the provisional figure of December 21.

According to analysts, the next week will witness volatility in the markets as traders generally prefer to roll over positions ahead of the expiry of derivatives segment.

The December series will end on Thursday. The BSE and NSE will remain shut on December 25 on account of Christmas.

Major losers from the Sensex pack were L&T (3.01 per cent), HDFC (2.81 per cent), ITC (2.69 per cent), HDFC Bank (1.80 per cent), Bharti Airtel (1.54 per cent), RIL (1.94 per cent) and M&M (1.30 per cent).

However, Tata Steel rose by 8.13 per cent, Hindalco 7.62 per cent, Jindal Steel 5.52 per cent, Cipla 3.67 per cent, Sterlite Ind 3.31 per cent, Tata Motors 2.57 per cent, Maruti Suzuki 1.99 per cent, Sun Pharma 1.85 per cent, HUL 1.63 per cent and Hero MotoCorp gained 1.52 per cent.

Among the sectoral indices, the BSE-Capital Goods dropped by 2.15 per cent, BSE-CD 1.80 per cent, BSE-Oil&gas 1.23 per cent, BSE-Realty 0.90 per cent and Bankex lost 0.80 per cent.

However, the BSE-Metal rose by 4.44 per cent, BSE-HC (health care) by 0.97 per cent and BSE-Auto was up 0.81 per cent.

The total turnover at BSE and NSE was Rs 12,784.27 crore and Rs 63,160.24 crore, respectively as against the last week’s level of Rs 10,387.37 crore and 64,486.65 crore

The Sensex ended lower on Friday, marking a second week of declines, as lenders were hit by profit taking, while Bharti Airtel fell after the Central Bureau of Investigation filed charges as part of a probe into alleged corruption in allocation of mobile airwaves.

The market also tracked weak global shares after a Republican proposal to deal with a US fiscal crunch failed to get enough support, deepening uncertainty over the US can avert the 'fiscal cliff' of automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to start January 1. The Sensex fell 1.09 per cent, or 211.92 points, to end at 19,242, marking its biggest single-day percentage fall since October 30, and ending 0.39 per cent lower for the week.

The Nifty shed 1.16 per cent, or 68.70 points, to end at 5,847.70, closing below the psychologically key 5,900 level, also ending down 0.54 per cent for the week.
