President Hugo Chávez’s battle against cancer, which he solemnly admitted to in a brief televised message from Cuba on Thursday night, has plunged Venezuela’s political future into doubt.
With presidential elections due in December 2012, it is feared that, if an ailing Mr Chávez is forced to abstain from running again, political infighting could erupt not only among his supporters but also his opponents.

China’s biggest wind turbine maker has taken a large step into the European market long dominated by local manufacturers, with a €1.5bn ($2.1bn) Irish wind farm deal.
In a move analysts said was the most significant to date by a Chinese wind company in Europe, Sinovel Wind Group has signed an agreement with Mainstream Renewable Power, an Irish wind park developer, that would see Chinese-built turbines installed in wind farms around Ireland over the next five years. The projects would have a combined capacity of 1,000MW, enough to power more than 500,000 homes. The capacity of all the wind turbines ever installed in Ireland is only just over 1,400MW.

Vodafone has agreed to pay an additional $460m for a stake in its Indian business, bringing the total cost to $5.46bn (£3.4bn), as the mobile phone group seeks to avoid a new tax dispute with the Indian authorities.
The company announced in March that it would pay $5bn for 33 per cent of Vodafone Essar, buying the Essar conglomerate out of the company.

Poland began its first European Union presidency with a promise from Donald Tusk, prime minister, to lead a “no taboos” discussion about the bloc’s next long-term budget.
