BSE Sensex closes at 7-mth high

Posted on Feb 21 2012

The 30-share benchmark index ended 139.26 points higher at 18,428.61 — to its highest close since Jul 27, 2011 — with 19 of its components closing in the red.

The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.77 percent or 42.85 points higher at 5,607.15 points on Tuesday.

The days rise was encouraged by hopes of easing monetary policy decisions and continuing inflow of funds from foreign portfolio investors who have pumped in over $4.4 billion so far this year, driving the Sensex up by more than 19 percent.

Lenders scrips were among the gainers on hopes that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would consider easing banks’ reserve requirements to help ease tight cash conditions while energy major Reliance Industries surged 3.1 percent on a joint venture announcement. (IBNS)
